Wheelchairs, My Requirement
By Malcolm Fraser
As a paraplegic who leads an active life, I require flexibility, strength, and versatility when it comes to wheelchairs. Though many people may think that all wheelchairs are pretty much alike, the truth is that there are many different kinds, and it is important to choose the one that fits your needs and your lifestyle perfectly.
The first thing that I had to consider when I was first choosing a wheelchair was that it needed to be easily portable even when I wasn’t using it. I was still driving using hand controls, so I needed to look at wheelchairs that were collapsible, yet still strong. I needed a chair that I could fold easily after I had gotten into the car.
I also needed a collapsible chair that was comfortable, and that had wheel locks for when I was stationery, like when I was at work. I didn’t need a motorized wheelchair, but I did need one with wheels that were comfortable to grip. Fortunately, I was able to find a collapsible wheelchair that met all my criteria for day to day activities.
I needed two wheelchairs, one for my everyday activities, and one for racing, such as in marathons. My racing wheelchair needed to be comfortable, and designed for speed and ease of use. I was able to find a racing wheelchair with a light frame, low seat, and wheels that were set for comfortable gripping.
My biggest requirement was that my wheelchairs had to fit my lifestyle. My handicap is only a small part of who I am, and I need to be able to live my life to the fullest. Fortunately I was able to find the chairs that fit all my needs.
